A&J's Highpoints Journal
The Cross-country Move HP Pitstop

The time came for me to head off to my next assignment. The Air Force reassigned me to Colorado Springs, Colorado. So... with a long cross-country move, how many highpoints can we reach? Reviewing the maps showed a few possible candidates along our planned trip: Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Kansas. Well as luck would have it, we were running very short on time. Ohio was too far out of the way, Indiana was doable, Missouri was also too far out of the way and we just plain didn't have time for Kansas. But Kansas isn't too far... "I'll be back."

Highpoint #12: Hoosier Hill, Indiana (1257 ft)
Friday December 14, 2001

It was our first night's stop on a three day move. We had a BIG U-haul with all our stuff in it towing the Jeep on a flatbed trailer and J was driving the Maxima. That first night we made it as far as the border between Ohio and Indiana all the way from Pennsylvania. The next morning the weather was poor... it was cloudy and raining. We rounded up our cats and put them back in the Jeep (this was where they traveled). Locked the U-haul, hopped in the Maxima and headed for Hoosier Hill. It was a relatively short 20 minute drive from the motel where we stayed at off the interstate. We located the grove of trees, parked the car and grabbed the camera. It was less than a hundred yard off the road, marked by a stone cairn along the side of a farmer's field where the tree grove began. A small path lead to a set of stairs built over the fence and the Highpoint sign was just beyond... complete with flag and all! We hurriedly snapped a few pictures and jumped back in the car to get back to all our worldly possessions (including our cats) which was sitting in a U-haul in a motel parking lot. The whole excursion only took about 45 minutes. Then on we pressed for Colorado!

Here's an upclose picture of the sign. With the weather as poor as it was, there was no telling if any of our pictures would turn out. Luckily they did!

The highpoint was in a grove of trees in a farmer's field. Thankfully, they built a set of stairs to get over the fence.
